My contribution to the charity art auction for Heart Work Heroes

This is the second time I painted this object as the first time during a public exhibition it got destroyed during the football riots in Rotterdam where over 12 statues got vandalized. During which an arm was broken off and several holes in the head and body rendered it unsaleable. The first time the statue did not include the gold addition. But with a good idea by Arjo de Ligt of adding the Japanese Kintsugi technique the artwork ressurected. Kintsugi is a process where the mend all broken parts with gold to make the object while again whilst incorporating and showing the history of the breakage as part of its own story.

This statue will be for auction soon to help raise funds to involve and stimulate the next generation of people to start a career in the medical field, like future nurses and doctors. In total ther have been over 40 pieces made and displayed all throughout the city center of Rotterdam. Please check out the page of Heart Work Heroes for more information on the process and how to get involved. Your help will be much appreciated.

Big up to Herman and his team for setting up this non profit project.

De Laat started painting murals and canvases, often based on his own photographs of the people he met during his travels. He exaggerates the natural lines in their faces, and fills the spaces that appear between those swirling lines with swaths of vivid color. The linework and color palette he applies in that way, are a means of translating his memories of Latin America to visual imagery. The food, the architecture, the clothes, and particularly his respect for the culture of indigenous peoples; it’s all in there, as de Laat transitions it over to enliven drab Western concrete.
