Visiting Wynwood Miami is always a pleasure, all the artistic senses are triggered painting amongst such legends that gather from all over the world to showcase their work. The sense of the art community is tangible when the overspray hits floridian humidity on the streets that are painted top to bottom.

A big thanks goes out to Mondriaan Fonds for supporting me on this journey, my friend Brian for always being a perfect host and introducing me to Osiris Rain who went above and beyond helping me out at the wall and adding even more buzz to the paint sessions. Much love to Wynwood Mural Fest for accomodating me on this prime wall in the wynwood district. Everything fell into place and i am very thankful for all the people i got to meet. You know who you are.

The portrait painted is based on my travels to Puebla Mexico last year where i photographed Camila Mora whilst wondering the streets the day before dia de los muertos was about to kick off.

De Laat started painting murals and canvases, often based on his own photographs of the people he met during his travels. He exaggerates the natural lines in their faces, and fills the spaces that appear between those swirling lines with swaths of vivid color. The linework and color palette he applies in that way, are a means of translating his memories of Latin America to visual imagery. The food, the architecture, the clothes, and particularly his respect for the culture of indigenous peoples; it’s all in there, as de Laat transitions it over to enliven drab Western concrete.
