Tymon de Laat 2024

Usually my work is known for portraits of people I meet and photograph around the world. In these portraits, I tell stories about their traditions and way of life. For this exhibition, I changed and made an exception of my approach by using an AI prompt to create a fictional Mongolian adventurer to match the theme of the exposition “the unexplored world”. Through this, I explore this new technology and shape its interpretation of the unknown. It is amazing to see how easy it is to have AI come up with a reference but I prefer the human connection and the challenge of finding and photographing the person for the art I have in mind.
So no worries, my narrative will not budge😉.

A big thanks goes out to Jan-Henk van Ieperen and Kings of Colors for inviting me and Nederlands IJsbeelden Festival for the opportunity. And LMC bud Ard Doko for the good times and early morning bike rides in the freezing Dutch weather.

De Laat started painting murals and canvases, often based on his own photographs of the people he met during his travels. He exaggerates the natural lines in their faces, and fills the spaces that appear between those swirling lines with swaths of vivid color. The linework and color palette he applies in that way, are a means of translating his memories of Latin America to visual imagery. The food, the architecture, the clothes, and particularly his respect for the culture of indigenous peoples; it’s all in there, as de Laat transitions it over to enliven drab Western concrete.
