Thank you UPFEST and the whole crew for all the good care. Big love for Paul Roberts So nice to meet old and new artist friends.

I like to paint people in places least expected in the hope they start conversations and spark interest into exploring the world.

Santiago Matatlán in Mexico is the mezcal capital of the world. Wandering the streets of this country town with my good culinary buddy In de keuken van Floris exploring the production of this ancestral mezcal. Making this very labour intensive smoke flavoured spirit is hard work where most is still done by hand. From picking the Agave and roasting the agave hearts in a giant fire pit covering it for sometimes over a month, to slicing it up with a machete and destilling it into this unique flavor is not an easy task and demands precision and decication.
The people I met there told a whole story with just their face, I could see the life they lived from their expression.

De Laat started painting murals and canvases, often based on his own photographs of the people he met during his travels. He exaggerates the natural lines in their faces, and fills the spaces that appear between those swirling lines with swaths of vivid color. The linework and color palette he applies in that way, are a means of translating his memories of Latin America to visual imagery. The food, the architecture, the clothes, and particularly his respect for the culture of indigenous peoples; it’s all in there, as de Laat transitions it over to enliven drab Western concrete.
