For this wall which was an unexpected addition to the Uruguay trip to document the true Gaucho I got connected to Jesus from 33 Grados festival.

Painting and adventure are one of the most full filling things in life for me. Exploring new cultures and meeting new people. With my portraits I search for contrast in backgrounds, for this mural I decided to paint my model Mariah Mwale from Zambia on an Uruguayan wall. For me these 2 cultures seem to not have a logical and direct connection. Serving as a reminder that we should celebrate all the diversity of humanity and remember that despite all our differences we are equal and search for more or less the same life goals

I want to give a big thanks to all the super friendly and engaged people of Uruguay, it is truly an amazing trip and the search for the Gaucho continues.

De Laat started painting murals and canvases, often based on his own photographs of the people he met during his travels. He exaggerates the natural lines in their faces, and fills the spaces that appear between those swirling lines with swaths of vivid color. The linework and color palette he applies in that way, are a means of translating his memories of Latin America to visual imagery. The food, the architecture, the clothes, and particularly his respect for the culture of indigenous peoples; it’s all in there, as de Laat transitions it over to enliven drab Western concrete.
