Madre Tierra is a message from the mother earth paradise. A notion that all people despite their cultural, religious, ethnical differences, beliefs and appearances still belong to the same human kind and have to live under one roof. This planet is not ours but only borrowed from our following generations.
A big thank you goes out to the many people who have made this journey possible. Especially i would like to thank Kick Smol for the invitation. Also my appreciation goes out to the municipality of Rotterdam, the cultuurscouts and people who live in the Noorderhof. Thank you!

This piece is dedicated to my father Willem de Laat who passed way 3 years ago on the day I finished the wall.

De Laat started painting murals and canvases, often based on his own photographs of the people he met during his travels. He exaggerates the natural lines in their faces, and fills the spaces that appear between those swirling lines with swaths of vivid color. The linework and color palette he applies in that way, are a means of translating his memories of Latin America to visual imagery. The food, the architecture, the clothes, and particularly his respect for the culture of indigenous peoples; it’s all in there, as de Laat transitions it over to enliven drab Western concrete.
