Tymon de Laat 2019

Leilana means heavenly flower in Polynesia. This mural was made during for the Street Colors Bonaire  project on the tropical island in de Caribbean and is situated on cocktailbar called Tiki&co run by award winning mix master Eddy Trenidad who gave me complete freedom to paint whatever came up.

I would like to thank Rewriters010 and Hofikultural for inviting me to come to Bonaire to teach local kids art classes and paint some wall in the free time.

Normally I paint from my own reference photos (90% of the time) that I take when travelling the world, this time I found this image online and fell in love with it. Unfortunately I could not track down the original photographer to give credits to him or her. I would love to find out who this is and perhaps you can help me spread the message and fingers crossed we can track em down and give credit when credit is due. Thank you for the support.

De Laat started painting murals and canvases, often based on his own photographs of the people he met during his travels. He exaggerates the natural lines in their faces, and fills the spaces that appear between those swirling lines with swaths of vivid color. The linework and color palette he applies in that way, are a means of translating his memories of Latin America to visual imagery. The food, the architecture, the clothes, and particularly his respect for the culture of indigenous peoples; it’s all in there, as de Laat transitions it over to enliven drab Western concrete.
