Commissioned painting.
Model Giuliana Manzoni @gmgiuli.

This is my first painting on an eliptical canvas which in this case holds it significance as a mirror.
When preparing to portraying Giuliana we spoke about many elements that make her into the person that she is today and the things she has overcome to arrive at this mid point in life. Without disclosing any personal details this work speaks about a moment of reflection that celebrates the person she is and has become today, an introspective that hopefully has captured her essence.

These commissions are always the hardest as they have such a personal character as opposed to me painting a person that i have photographed on my travels and paint them on a wall. This work will be hanging in her house as a reminder to be appreciative of one self and the path that she has travelled and lies before her. I owe Guiliana much gratitude for her trust as the painting was only revealed to her once it was done and there was no sneak peaking along the way πŸ˜….This is something i ask of my clients but I am unsure of I could live up to myself when i would order a painting. Maybe there is a lesson in here for me aswell.

Giuliana thank you for your trust and friendship along the way. I am happy to know this painting is now hanging in your riverhouse in the beautifull south of France.

De Laat started painting murals and canvases, often based on his own photographs of the people he met during his travels. He exaggerates the natural lines in their faces, and fills the spaces that appear between those swirling lines with swaths of vivid color. The linework and color palette he applies in that way, are a means of translating his memories of Latin America to visual imagery. The food, the architecture, the clothes, and particularly his respect for the culture of indigenous peoples; it’s all in there, as de Laat transitions it over to enliven drab Western concrete.
