Merida Mexico 2020.
Tymon de Laat.

Last wall of the trip in Merida Mexico. I was looking for outside walls to paint but things did not work out as quick as my flight back to NL was leaving. Mexican protocol is a quick as in any other country. The walls came through but just a little too late. Never the less a great reason to go back and paint some more in this country that has given me so much inspiration.

Thankfully I got invited by the crew from Acervo Mezcalero de Sureste to paint one of their Bruxo mezcal producers in their place that just opened a couple of week prior.
A big thank you to the Acervo crew for the trust and support and hermano Asis Cortes for the set up.

De Laat started painting murals and canvases, often based on his own photographs of the people he met during his travels. He exaggerates the natural lines in their faces, and fills the spaces that appear between those swirling lines with swaths of vivid color. The linework and color palette he applies in that way, are a means of translating his memories of Latin America to visual imagery. The food, the architecture, the clothes, and particularly his respect for the culture of indigenous peoples; it’s all in there, as de Laat transitions it over to enliven drab Western concrete.
