Last year just before we all got the covid chronicles presented I was fortunate enough to visit Cuba. In Cienfuegos I met this Cuban musician at palacio del Valle which was playing all the Buena vista social club classics. It is true that music runs through Cuban veins as their heart pounds the beat.

As I like to interchange cultures as an reminder that there is only one human race I saw the opportunity fit to paint him on the paradise called Bonaire at the Hofi Kultural centre for arts and music. A project called Street Colors Bonaire set up by Rewriters010 and Hofi Kultural Invited me for 5 weeks to give “street art’ classes to the local youth as in this small community of total 20.000 people there is no formal art education. After the workshops I was free to paint to my hearts content. I would like to thank all the people I got to meet on this journey you all made it a very special time, I hope you all keep painting.

De Laat started painting murals and canvases, often based on his own photographs of the people he met during his travels. He exaggerates the natural lines in their faces, and fills the spaces that appear between those swirling lines with swaths of vivid color. The linework and color palette he applies in that way, are a means of translating his memories of Latin America to visual imagery. The food, the architecture, the clothes, and particularly his respect for the culture of indigenous peoples; it’s all in there, as de Laat transitions it over to enliven drab Western concrete.
